Violin or Fiddle?

This instrument has been in the family for over ninety years and may have originated in Shetland (or perhaps Leith). It belonged to and was played by my mother's father. Unfortunately no one in our house can play, although my mother reckons she could have a good go at it given a bit of time and practice as she could get a tune out of it in the past.

Olympus E-3; ISO 200; f4.5; 1/30s; 23mm. Natural daylight from bay window all sides but right.

  2. Lovely, I like the tone (is that the right word? the sepia tone) teehee...also, it's a violin! lol! I'm so funny. I used to play when I was in high school - still got my violin, I should start playing again.

  3. What makes this is a violin and not a fiddle? What's the official definition of each instrument?

  4. I believe the terms violin and fiddle to be largely interchangeable. There is no difference in the physical make up of the fiddle and the violin. It is a difference in terminology only.
